A Note from Coach Joya Whittington to the 2018-19 Lady Falcons Basketball Team

(Scranton, PA) – In addition to the Lady Falcons making the Final Four of the NJCAA DII Women's National Basketball Tournament, the NJCAA announced that Lackawanna College also won the B.J. Garber Sportsmanship Award. This award is given out to the team that showed tremendous sportsmanship on and off the court, heart, professionalism, and sincerity. Congratulations to the Lady Falcons Basketball team on this award and their hard work all season.

A note from Coach Joya Whittington to the Lackawanna College Basketball team:

"This trip to the National Tournament had a large theme of empowering women about it. Prior to leaving, we spoke to you about professionalism. We told you people were constantly going to be talking to you and asking where you are from. They will ask you, why are you here? We wanted you to embrace those conversations and begin to build a network. Most of the team had never been on an airplane or been that far from home before. This was your time to shine, your time to embrace new experiences and people. Not only did I see everybody engaging in conversation with new people, everywhere we went I noticed a large sense of pride and joy in your faces. You not only made new friends, you represented our school with class.  When the tournament director and NJCAA announced at the final awards ceremony that we were receiving the B.J. Garber Sportsmanship award, I felt so incredibly proud in that moment. Being a student athlete is a difficult task that takes a particularly disciplined individual. We made a long post-season run and you met demanding challenges only to earn greater rewards. For our team to receive this award means you truly took in and embraced exactly what we asked prior to leaving for the National Tournament. Our hope as a coaching staff is to continue to elevate young women to be strong and confident; basketball is just our vehicle that allows us to do so. Thank you for your hard work this season. We can't say it enough; we are proud of you. I am proud of you."
